Fire Response

Step 1: Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

  • Remain calm to think clearly.
  • Quickly determine the fire’s size and location.

Step 2: Alert Others and Activate the Fire Alarm

  • Immediately alert anyone nearby about the fire.
  • Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station if you’re in a building equipped with one.

Step 3: Call Emergency Services

  • Call your local emergency number to report the fire. Provide them with specific details about the location and any known hazards.

Step 4: Use a Fire Extinguisher (If Safe)

  • Only attempt to use a fire extinguisher if the fire is small, contained, and in the early stages.
  • Ensure you know how to use the extinguisher properly, remembering the PASS technique: Pull the pin, Aim low at the base of the fire, Squeeze the lever slowly, and Sweep the nozzle side to side.

Step 5: Evacuate Immediately

  • If the fire cannot be extinguished quickly and safely, evacuate the area immediately.
  • Use the nearest safe exit or emergency exit route. Do not use elevators during a fire.

Step 6: Close Doors Behind You

  • Close doors as you leave to help contain the fire.

Step 7: Crawl If There’s Smoke

  • If there is smoke, stay low to the ground where the air is cooler and cleaner.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth to filter out smoke and toxic gases.

Step 8: Check Doors for Heat Before Opening

  • Before opening doors, use the back of your hand to check if they are hot. If a door is hot, do not open it; find another escape route.

Step 9: Go to Your Designated Meeting Point

  • Once safely outside, go to your pre-determined meeting point away from the building.
  • Do not re-enter the building under any circumstances.

Step 10: Give Information to Emergency Responders

  • Once the fire department arrives, provide them with any information about the fire and if anyone may be trapped inside.

Remember:

  • Never underestimate a fire. Even small fires can spread rapidly.
  • Prioritize human life over property. Objects can be replaced, lives cannot.
  • Practice fire drills regularly so everyone knows what to do in case of a fire.

These steps are fundamental for a quick and safe response to a fire emergency, ensuring the safety of yourself and others around you.
